Has anyone read Allen Carr’s book "The Easy Way To Stop Smoking"?

I am on the last few chapters and am still nervous and scared to stop smoking. Wondering if anyone has read this book and successfully quit with his method and if you have any advice on how to turn the withdrawal pangs into a positive thought. I am not known to think positively very often.

No I haven’t read that, but have a suggestion that helped me… borrow library books on positive thinking and the sub conscious.

Sins of the Flesh

When we read the New Testament, we cannot help but notice how much of the text is devoted to sin. That’s not by chance. Christ, we must remember, died to redeem us from sin. Considering his sacrifice, to continue in our sins would be the height of ingratitude. Of course there is a more personal reason to refrain from sin. The penalty is severe.

Before we discuss sins of any type, permit me to say at the outset: I’m not preaching! My shortcomings are probably as great or greater than your own. All I intend to do in the next four topics is to tell you what the scriptures have to say about sin and its consequences. And to present that in a such a way it may be remembered.

You won’t find sins classified in the Bible, although many are mentioned, scattered randomly throughout the writings. Nevertheless, all sins seem to fit into four broad categories: sins of the flesh, sins of the mind or spirit, sins against other people, and sins directly against God.

Let’s start with the most sensual category . . . Sins of the Flesh. (We will review the other three topics in later articles.)

Sins of the flesh is a rather old fashion way of putting it, but it is an apt description. The term means not controlling our appetites. Included in this group is: debauchery, drunkenness, idleness, and sexual immorality.

Debauchery

By definition debauchery means gross indulgence of our sensual appetites. Paul and Peter both warn us not to engage in debauchery or orgies. (Romans 13:13) (1 Peter 4:3) Debauchery and orgies are acts of a sinful nature. Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)

Proverbs refers to gluttons twice: “Drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” (Proverbs 23:21) And “He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.” ( Proverbs 28:7)

The New Testament speaks of gluttons once. Paul quoted the sixth century B.C. poet, Epimenides saying: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” (Titus 1:12)

Should our understanding of debauchery be limited to food and sex? Clearly, they were mentioned because they were two temptations prevalent during the first century. We have more to tempt us now. Today we can destroy our bodies by smoking, drinking, or drugs. And we can destroy our finances by gambling.

God gave us brains for a reason; he expects us to use them. Surely common sense tells us, even if the pleasure is innocent in and of itself, the safest rule is: nothing to excess. In the case of smoking, drugs, and gambling probably the best advice is to just say “No.”

Paul wrote the Ephesians telling them to avoid drunkenness which leads to debauchery. (Ephesians 5:18) This leads to the second sin of the flesh . . .

Drunkenness

Are Christians required to be teetotalers? I have heard sermons to that effect. The scriptures, however, tell us a different story. Remember Jesus’ first miracle?

At a wedding feast in Cana in Galilee, Jesus told the servants to fill six stone jars, each holding twenty to thirty gallons, with water. After they filled them to the brim, Jesus said, “Draw some out and give it to the master of the banquet.” They did. After tasting it, the banquet master wondered aloud why they had saved the best wine until last. (John 2:1-10)

And then there is Paul’s advice to Timothy: “Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.” (1 Timothy 5:23)

Also read the qualifications for deacons in the church. “Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine.” (1 Timothy 3:8) Notice he didn’t say, “any wine” he said, “much wine.”

Obviously, neither Jesus nor Paul considered drinking wine a sin.

Here’s another thing. The “fruit of the vine” represents Christ’s blood in the Lord’s Supper. We are to take it in memory of him and his sacrifice. In the days before refrigeration, grape juice fermented rapidly in the heat of the middle east. Consequently, for most of the year, early Christians were drinking wine in keeping with the Lord’s command. Christianity is not a teetotaler religion. Drunkenness, however, is another matter.

Jesus warned us: “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap.” (Luke 21:34)

Paul lists drunkenness with debauchery and orgies and condemns all three. (Romans 13:13) He calls it an act of the sinful nature, and warns us that drunkards do not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:21)

Moderation, not abstinence, is the rule for alcoholic beverages. Certainly there is nothing wrong with abstinence. But Christianity does not demand it.

Idleness

For some people the easiest thing in the world to do is — nothing. Laziness and idleness come natural to them. Have you noticed? Vices are easy to acquire; it is the virtues we have to work at.

In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul issues a warning to the idle. (1 Thessalonians 5:14) And in his second letter, Paul orders the church to stay away from every brother who is idle. When we were among you, you did not see us idling. We worked. And we gave you this rule: If a man will not work, he shall not eat. . . . If anyone disobeys these instructions, single him out and have nothing to do with him until he is ashamed of himself. Don’t treat him like an enemy, but admonish him as one of the family. (2 Thessalonians 3:6-10)

Paul: “Those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.” (Titus 3:8)

Paul also cautioned the church not to support widows under the age sixty for they may become idlers, gossips, and busybodies. (1 Timothy 5:13)

How serious is the sin of idleness? Paul did not consider it a minor offense. In his first letter to Timothy, he writes: “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1 Timothy 5:8)

Idleness along with debauchery and drunkenness is not permitted in Christianity.

Sexual Immorality

The Christian rule on sex is simple and straightforward. All sex outside of marriage is strictly forbidden. Singles must abstain from sex. Those who marry must remain faithful to their spouse until death.

Which do you think is more difficult? loving your enemies or living a lifetime of chastity. Both run counter to our natural instincts. God, however, understands our natural tendencies. He issues warning after warning on fornication and adultery. He also warns us against yielding to unnatural desires: sexual perversions, homosexual and lesbian behavior, (Romans 1:24-27) and male prostitution. (1 Corinthians 6:9)

Certainly, all of us are not tempted by the same thing. In fact, I would go so far as to say that most of us can take most temptations in stride. Sure, we don’t drink too much, or gamble too much, or go out of our way to cause other people problems. But when it comes down to something or another that really tickles our fancy, such as __________ (fill in the blank with the temptation of your choice), all of a sudden a thousand and one excuses will rush into your head.

You know how it goes. For whatever reason, God is going to overlook this little discretion this time. After all, we are not hurting anybody else. We know everybody else does it or maybe even something worse. And, of course, I’m really a good person at heart. That’s all that really matters. God’s fair. Surely, he will see it my way.

How easy it is to talk ourselves into doing what we really want to do. There’s one little problem though. Every choice we make is leading us down one of two paths. Either we are growing more like Christ with acts of charity, courage, and faith, or we are slowly sinking into a mire of sin and excuses becoming a creature fit only for hell.

Tell me, what do you think? Did Jesus die for our sins? Was he resurrected from the grave? Did he promise us eternal life if we follow him? Did he and his disciples tells us to avoid sexual misconduct? Should we obey his command? If we answer “yes” to everyone of these questions, then we really don’t have a choice.

No one promised Christianity would be easy. We aren’t here to gratify our own desires, we are here to obey Christ’s commands. If he says “do,” we do; if he says “don’t,” we don’t. We know, of course, that whatever he tells us is really for our own good.

Paul gives us this reassurance: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13) Bearing that in mind, what does the New Testament say about fornication?

Fornication

Fornication is voluntary sexual intercourse between unmarried people. Christ says it defiles a man - makes him unclean. (Matthew 15:18-20) And in Revelation, the resurrected Jesus issues this dire warning: “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)

Paul too condemns fornication saying fornicators will not inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9) He orders us to stay away from this sin. See Ephesians 5:3 and 1 Corinthians 6:18-20.

Adultery

Adultery is voluntary sexual intercourse of a married person with someone other than the spouse. Jesus tells us that adultery, like fornication, defiles a man and makes him unclean. (Matthew 15:18-20) Then Jesus drives his point home saying that if you want eternal life, do not commit adultery. (Luke 18:18-20)

Jesus warns us not to even think about adultery. Here are his words: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28)

Paul agrees: Adulterers will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (1 Corinthians 6:9)

Fornication and adultery are the natural desires. What of the unnatural desires?

Perverts, Homosexual Offenders, Lesbians, and Male Prostitutes

Paul lists perverts in with murderers, adulterers, slave traders, and liars as those who flout the sound teachings of the gospel. (1 Timothy 1:9-11) He also speaks of homosexual offenders and lesbians. The apostle offers this explanation: Because people worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. (Romans 1:25-27)

Some claim today that Paul just didn’t like homosexuals. That’s why he added those “homophobic” remarks to his writings. However, the anti-homosexual view clearly did not originate with Paul. Long before Paul was born, the Lord said to Moses: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.” (Leviticus 18:22) And again the Lord condemned homosexuality: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (Leviticus 20:13)

It appears that it’s God, not Paul, who detests homosexual conduct.

Paul also mentioned male prostitutes. Male prostitutes will not inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

Enough said. God will not tolerate fornicators, adulterers, perverts, homosexual or lesbian offenders, or male prostitutes.

Questions to Consider:

Which of these sins: debauchery, drunkenness, idleness, sexual Immorality is worth losing eternity in the kingdom of heaven? Which is worth eternity in hell?

“Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it’s hurtful.” Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

How To Easily Pick The Symptoms Of Heart Disease

Symptoms of heart disease often go undetected because we as a society in general will tend to put up with what we may call heart burn or dizziness or swallen legs and much more without thinking it necessary to go to the doctor. We think these symptoms are nothing and will just go away. And of course they often do go away for a while but then they return. I know from experience with two brothers that they put up with this type of thing for years and years without seeking help until one of them ended up having a major heart attack.

When he was checked out properly at the hospital he was told that he had already had minor attacks but didn’t know it! This also was the case with another brother. So to all you macho men in particular that think nothing will happen to me – get checked out if you have been experiencing any of these symptoms of heart disease. One of my brothers continued ignoring these symptoms and sadly he died of a massive heart attack. This was so unnecessary.

I know many of you may feel that they are just bothering the doctor with minor ailments but really these could be the start to something fatal. It is always better to be cautious than to be ignorant. Even though very healthy active people can have a heart attack it is still more likely to occur in people who are over weight, smoke, are unfit, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and are stressed. This coupled with signs such as chest tightening, dizziness, swollen legs, palpitations, shortening of breath are a major sign of heart problems that definitely should not be ignored. If you are someone like this then you should be taking on some preventative measures before it is too late.

Some of these measures are firstly seeing to your doctor to have some tests done. Seriously consider losing weight by eating healthy at the same time as starting a gentle exercise program that has been approved by your doctor. You must stop smoking!! Just by doing these things you will notice that you will have less symptoms of heart disease to worry about. For the majority of people heart attacks can be prevented or at least delayed substantially if you start looking after your body correctly. It is never too late.

Having a healthy body and mind will also help you to read these symptoms of heart disease much better allowing you to take control of your destiny instead of living as though you were a time bomb ready to go off. Another point to remember is that heart disease does not only affect men but it is highly prevalent in women. So all you women out there take note of what I have just said as it includes you too.

Weight Loss - The Natural Way

Weight loss is such a BIG issue with so many people. We have hundreds of thousands of companies vying to sell you weight loss products, and doctors all over the place telling people to lose weight. So, you’d think after all this time and effort that weight loss would be easy!

Wouldn’t you?

Why isn’t weight loss easy with all this effort that’s gone into it?

The Yo-yo Diet

This report is dedicated to all those of you who feel the pressure to lose weight. On the one side are all the doctors and the magazines telling you to lose weight. On the other side, all the diet companies are selling magic cures with diets that, somehow, just don’t seem to work. You try diet after diet after diet, and always end up with just as much weight, if not more, than before.

Remember the Atkins diet? Sure, it got you to lose weight. And with it, your health. After the Atkins diet was over, what happened? That’s right, all the weight came back on again, only this time your health was damaged. Not one nutritionist that I’ve spoken to had anything good to say about this diet.

The Reality

The reality is… Diets don’t work.

If you don’t believe that, consider this. Depending on whom you ask, up to 97% of diets don’t work. If diets did work, would people be struggling to lose weight? No! They’d take a diet, the weight would come off, and that would be the end of the story.

Instead, around two-thirds of people in the UK are overweight. About a quarter of people are obese. At any one time, a half of all women and a quarter of all men are trying to lose weight.

How many people do you know have tried more than once to lose weight?

Did you know that people in the UK spend around £335 million on diet products after their New Year’s resolutions? Then, they spend more during the rest of the year. That’s a whole lot of money spent on something that doesn’t work!

Hmm…

Now, I won’t say that diet companies make their money by selling products that keep you overweight. But it does make me wonder…

What else?

Health. Overweight problems cost the UK around 30,000 deaths each year — at an average of nine years off your life. It’ll soon overtake smoking as the UK’s biggest killer. The NHS spends £500 million each year just on weight-related health problems. That’s a lot of tax money!

Our children. More children than ever before suffer weight-related health problems such as cancer. So many children are overweight that some people say today’s children will die before their parents!

The emotional toil. Depression, lack of sleep, tiredness, lack of self-esteem and confidence, feelings of failure… The list is endless.

The cost. How much money do you spend on diets that don’t work, gyms that you don’t go to (or that don’t help), and on food you didn’t want to eat? If you’ve finally given up on trying to lose weight, how much does it cost you in happiness?

The gym myth

How many people do you know are trying to lose weight through going to gym? Well, gyms have an 80% dropout rate. That means they make most of their money from people that don’t go! I’ll bet most of those people wanted to lose weight…

Do you know, most people I know that don’t have a weight problem also don’t go to gym.

Hmm…

This leads me on to the next point…

The willpower problem

Willpower is probably the worst possible way to try to lose weight. In fact, it’s probably the worst possible way to change anything. Very few people give up smoking, change their drinking habits, stop biting their nails, or lose weight, through willpower. In almost all cases, it simply doesn’t work.

And that’s one of the problems with diets. Diets usually require willpower.

So…

To summarise, then:

Diets don’t work. After a diet, you usually put on as much, or more, than you lost.

Being overweight is unhealthy. The problem is, dieting is also unhealthy.

Being overweight is costly not only in health, but also emotionally and financially.

You may not lose much weight by going to gym — if you manage to keep going, that is.

Willpower doesn’t work. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading this!

Well, then, what does work?

The answer, of course, is to look at people who find it easy to keep to their correct weight. And then to copy what they do! The rest of this report will be about what does work. Specifically, it will tell you about:

Losing weight and then keeping it off for good.

Making the changes pleasant, so you don’t use loads of willpower.

Why these changes are healthy for you, and how they keep getting better.

Why the changes work naturally, the way nature intended, so it becomes easier and easier…not harder and harder!

How these changes naturally increase your metabolic rate, helping you to lose weight and keep it off.

In short, it’s about changing your relationship to food.

Eat!

The biggest myth of weight loss is that you have to starve yourself. Now, tell me: Is it natural to starve yourself? Of course not! Your body has powerful ways to make that hard. When you starve yourself, your body goes into shock. It slows your metabolic rate, and it makes you feel really bad, to try to persuade you to eat again. Whenever you do eat, your body sends out masses of endorphins — those are hormones that make you feel great — so that you find it hard to stop eating. And, when your diet is over, your body remembers the starvation and does everything it can to keep your metabolic slow, and store as much fat as it can — “just in case it happens again!”

Notice how everything is the exact opposite of what you want!

So, am I telling you to eat? Yes, I am! But, be careful…

There are good ways to eat and bad ways to eat.

Before I tell you about the good ways to eat, let me tell you two things that are even more important to weight loss.

Breathing

Yes, breathing! If you want to lose weight, you’ve got to learn to breathe properly. You see, the primary purpose of food is energy. And, you get most of your energy from oxygen. If you breathe badly, your body may ask for more energy; and you can confuse this with a request for food.

Good breathing will also lift your spirits, which is good if you often feel down, and it will improve your health.

Breathing is simple once you know how. Perhaps you want to check out my breathing tips & exercises.

Water

You know you get most of your energy from breathing. Believe it or not, you get most of the rest of your energy from water. Ensure you drink plenty of water every day. If you don’t like water, try getting a good water filter and notice the difference.

Here are three important tips about drinking.

Fruit juice is excellent for you, but processed juice (such as you get from the shops) often doesn’t contain enough water and can contain excess sugar.

How do you know when you’ve had enough water? Simply put, check the colour when you pass water. It should look clear (or very pale yellow). If it’s yellow, drink more water. You should drink water before you feel thirsty.

Anything with caffeine (coffee, tea, certain soft drinks, chocolate, slimming tablets) or alcohol forces your body to dehydrate itself. If you have these, be sure to take extra water. Better still, stay off the caffeine and reduce your alcohol.

If you feel hungry, have a glass of water. This will always reduce your hunger, although perhaps at first only by a little.

Adding water to your daily diet will have many other health bonuses, such as a better skin.

Before making sudden changes to your drinking and eating habits, please consult a physician or nutritionist first, in case of undiagnosed illnesses.

How to eat

Well, you already know that to eat properly, you first have to have a good breathing habit and a good water habit.

You also know that you should never starve yourself. Instead, you need to eat in a way that will increase your metabolic rate and decrease the amount of fat that your body stores.

So, here it is, direct from the nutritionists:

Eat when you’re hungry

This means that you may eat several times a day — at least six times! Instead of eating two or three big meals a day, eat six or seven small portions a day. This has two important effects. Your body remembers those starvation diets, right? Eating every time you’re hungry sends your body the opposite message — there’s too much food. After a while:

Your body will relax — it will stop trying to store all the food it can.

Your body will slowly start to increase its metabolic rate — permanently.

I never used to understand why I stayed so thin. I always ate many times throughout the day. Now you know the answer, of course: My body believes there’s too much food, and so instead of storing fat, it throws it all out.

Concentrate on your eating.

I have a friend. She eats a full plate of food. But she’s as skinny as a rake. The thing is, she never eats while talking or listening or watching TV or anything. When she eats, that’s all she does. My friend stops whatever she’s doing; takes a mouthful; puts her knife and fork down; and concentrates on her food. After she’s chewed and swallowed, if she’s not doing anything else (like listening), then she picks up her knife and fork and takes another bite.

My friend always remembers what she ate and what it tasted like. She loves her food. Because she thinks about what she’s eating.

So, here are the tips:

When you eat, do nothing else.

Don’t eat in front of the TV, in the cinema, or while reading.

If you’re chatting with people, wait for a lull in the conversation (or ignore the conversation for a short while) while you eat the next mouthful.

Concentrate on what’s in your mouth: Put down your knife and fork. Enjoy the taste, the texture, the temperature, the smell. When you swallow, feel the food going down your throat. After you’ve swallowed, wait for another lull in the conversation before you pick up the knife and fork.

If you’re eating a sandwich — at work, for example — stop working. Each time you take a bite, put down the sandwich. Enjoy your sandwich, every single bite, every single chew, every single swallow!

Remember: There’s no rush!

What about your diet?

This is only a short report, so there’s plenty I haven’t told you yet. However, these few things will make a big difference. Of course, you should eat healthy food; but for now, unless your doctor, nutritionist or other health expert has told you otherwise, just eat what you’d normally eat.

You’ll find some interesting changes start to happen all by themselves. As your body starts to adjust, it will gradually start to send you different messages. As you get more oxygen, more water, less fat, and a faster metabolic rate, your tastes will start to change. To start with, you may find oily food (chips, hamburger) becomes less tasty. You may find wholegrain foods (wholewheat bread, wholegrain rice, wholegrain pasta) becomes tastier than the refined versions. And so on. It takes time, but it will happen.

What else?

These are just some of the things that I work with when I deal with people’s weight problems. It’s amazing how much your appetite can diminish when you feel good about yourself!

As I said, there’s plenty that I haven’t included in this report, but the point is: You don’t need willpower, you don’t need diets, you don’t need to starve yourself. You just need to know what it is that you need to know, and a little help to get there!
